About the Word Counter

The Word Counter counts your text live as you type: words, characters with and without spaces, sentences and paragraphs. It also estimates reading time at an average 200 words per minute and speaking time at about 130 words per minute — useful for essays, speeches, scripts and video voice-overs where length matters.

How to use it

  1. Type or paste your text into the box.
  2. Read the live counts for words, characters, sentences and paragraphs.
  3. Check the reading and speaking time estimates below the counts.
  4. Copy the text or clear it when you are finished.

Frequently asked questions

Is my text saved or uploaded?

No. The counting happens entirely in your browser — nothing you type is sent to a server or stored anywhere.

How is reading time calculated?

Reading time uses an average silent-reading speed of about 200 words per minute. Speaking time uses about 130 words per minute, a typical pace for narration, speeches and presentations.

What counts as a word?

Any run of characters separated by spaces counts as one word, so a hyphenated word or a number each count once — the same way most editors and submission systems count.
